Examples of Fundraising Ideas

Sponsored Englefield Walk, Hospice Awareness Month  in June, Street Collections, Finchampstead Autumn Fayre, Light Up a Life service in December, coffee mornings, Annual Golf Day at Sandford Springs, pub collection boxes and sponsored events, payroll giving (Give As You Earn), sale of merchandise, sponsorships and corporate support. Legacies and donations in memory of a loved one are also important sources of income.

Each year in March / April the charity runs a water station outside the hospice in Liebenrood Road during the Reading Half Marathon, another of our annual events. Several thousand pounds is also raised by supporters who run for us at this event.  See below for our Sponsorship Form.

Supporters  wanting to raise money for us also get sponsorship for less energetic things like: swimming, head shave, total body wax, slimming, walking alongside the Thames etc!

Recently, people have been asking their friends to celebrate their significant birthdays, anniversaries or even weddings by giving donations to this charity rather than giving personal gifts.  This gifts are usually Gift Aid-able, increasing their value by 25%.  (HMRC will also be operating transitional provisions for Gift Aid donations made from 6 April 2008 until 5 April 2011, paying a Government supplement of 3p on every pound you give.)

Churches, lodges, Lions, Rotarians and other affinity groups are also very generous as are employees of supporting companies and pupils and students of schools and colleges.

"In memoriam" donations

In memoriam donations are commonly given direct by cheque or cash to the Charity Office, through the staff on the ward or via funeral directors. In all cases please let us know (preferably in writing) in whose memory the donation is being given. Please also provide your name and address so that we send you a receipt and acknowledgement.  Please use the individual donation form available from the link at the top of the page.

Completing a simple Gift Aid Declaration form (see following for sample) enables the charity to reclaim 25p in the pound back from Inland Revenue.  Donations to be eligible must relate to a donation given by an individual donor who has paid sufficient tax in the current tax year to equal or exceed the tax rebate that would thus become reclaimable to the charity.

When supplying your contact details please be assured that you will not be bombarded with appeal letters and other literature. Firstly, we have better uses for our funds than expensive mail shots and secondly, we respect your privacy and will not add you to the mailing list if that is your wish.  Currently we send out three newsletters a year, plus an invitation to Light Up A Life towards the end of the year.

If you are giving on behalf of a company or association  it will be assumed that your donation is in the public domain and might be published on this website, in our newsletter or on site notice boards. If it is your intention that no public acknowledgement be made, please advise us at the onset. Thank you.

You may also like to give us donations regularly through a direct payment from your bank or building society with a standing order. These you can easily arrange by completing a Standing Order Mandate.  Simply complete the mandate quoting in writing the amount you wish to give per month and your bank details and send the mandate to us. A suitable mandate is available from the link at the top of the page.

If you wish to make payment from overseas, please contact us.

Give As You Earn

GAYE is another scheme administered by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) with benefits to both the donor and the recipient charity and brings together charities, donors and employers with one common goal - to offer people a tax-free, simple way of giving to the charity or charities of their choice.

As an individual there are three ways by which you can give to your favourite charity through Give As You Earn:

  1. CAF 'cheques' - CharityCard Account
With a CAF CharityCard Account, the donor receives a 'charity chequebook' and CharityCard. By paying a minimum of £10 from your pay each month into your account, you can then decide which charities to donate to using your 'charity chequebook, CharityCard or by giving online or over the phone.

  2. Direct Donation
Choose the cause (s) you wish to support via monthly tax-free donations which are deducted from gross pay to the charity.

  3. Staff Charity Fund
This fund is for group giving and provides an excellent way to raise money that you and your colleagues care about. Donations are paid into an account held by Give As You Earn and you can choose together which cause (s) you would like to support, for example, your charity of the year. This way of giving does not usually incur an administration fess.

Registering as an employee costs nothing and GAYE is easy to administer for any payroll. The money comes straight from the employee's gross pay each month, and donations are disbursed monthly - straight into the charity's bank account.

The Government will add 10% to your donation to disburse straight to your chosen charity, CharityCard Account or Staff Charity Fund.

GAYE. generally makes a deduction of between 0 and 4% from your contribution to cover the cost of administration. Some employees cover this cost for their employees.
