The aim of palliative care is to provide holistic and multidisciplinary
specialist treatment focusing on quality of life and alleviation
of distressing symptoms. We treat adult patients with cancer and
other life shortening diseases.
A Palliative Care unit concentrates all the consultants, professionals,
carers, specialist facilities and volunteers under one roof with
some services extended to the home. The Duchess of Kent House has
both Inpatient and Day Care facilities, which it offers, appropriate
to individual need.
Within the West Berkshire Directorate area there are 2 further
centres at Macmillan House, Wokingham and West Berkshire Community
Hospital, Thatcham Newbury which are solely Day Care centres operating
3 -4 days a week. In addition, Newbury has four 'Rainbow Room' in
- patient beds at West Berkshire Community Hospital.
Medical consultants based at Duchess of Kent House hold weekly
clinics at both Wokingham and Newbury and other professionals also
visit and support these two centres. Additionally there is a specialist
reference library at Reading as well as a Clinical Nurse Teacher.
